On May 23, 2026, Johannesburg, South Africa, hosted a high-level National Kurash Championship.
About 100 athletes from Kurash clubs across the country competed for a spot on the national team that will participate in the African Championships.
The day-long competition was intense and uncompromising. The participants demonstrated their high level of technique, physical conditioning, and the willpower characteristic of true athletes. The competition served not only as a qualifying round but also once again demonstrated the growing popularity of Kurash in the country.

According to AKU President Thomas Dunker:

“Today’s competition shows that the level of Kurash in South Africa is rising. The participation of athletes from different regions is very important to us. It is encouraging that interest in Kurash is growing, especially among young people. Organizing such strong qualifying competitions ahead of the African Championship will further enhance the national team’s potential.”
