The Kurash programme at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi–Nagoya came to an end with the final day of competition. At the Aichi Prefectural Martial Arts Hall, the continent’s leading Kurash athletes competed for medals in the men’s -66 kg and women’s +87 kg weight categories. These were the final two categories on the Kurash programme at the Asian Games.
In the men’s -66 kg category, the decisive final was contested between representatives of Iran and Tajikistan. Iran’s Vahid Barimanlou Majid defeated Tajikistan’s Yosin Bobokalonov to become the Asian Games champion.
In the semi-finals, Vahid Barimanlou defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Kubanychbek Aibek Uulu 3–0, while Yosin Bobokalonov defeated fellow Tajikistan representative Sarvar Abdushukurov by the same score.
In the women’s +87 kg category, the gold medal went to the Republic of Korea’s Kim Minyoung. In the final, she defeated Chinese Taipei’s Shih Liu Li-ling with a yonbosh score. This result marked the Republic of Korea’s first-ever Kurash gold medal at the Asian Games.
In the semi-finals, Kim Minyoung defeated Kazakhstan’s Arailym Shegenova by a narrow margin, while Shih Liu Li-ling defeated Iran’s Fatemeh Barmaki Kordkolaee to book her place in the final.
At the conclusion of three days of competition, athletes from 10 countries won medals in Kurash at the Asian Games. Uzbekistan topped the overall medal tally with four gold and two bronze medals. Iran secured one gold, one silver and one bronze, while the Republic of Korea won one gold and one silver. Athletes from Chinese Taipei and Tajikistan each claimed two silver and one bronze medal. Japan and Kazakhstan each won two bronze medals, while India, Kyrgyzstan and Thailand each took home one bronze.
With this, the Kurash competition at the 20th Asian Games came to a close, with its champions and medallists determined and another memorable chapter added to the history of the sport.
