A new sports season began in Cameroon since March 3. The team of the Cameroon Kurash Association also made special preparations for the season.
In recent years, Kurash in Cameroon has really developed. We are organizing many promotional activities. Cameroon’s television channels specializing in sports are recording and broadcasting regular Kurash programs. Most importantly, we have established good relations with the Ministry of Sports and the sport leadership of the country.
People got to know Kurash. It became interesting.
I can tell you one incident as an example. At Sent-Jerom Catholic University, where I teach, when I first started Kurash classes, it was a little difficult to get people interested in it. But after I gave them more information about Kurash, young people quickly became interested in Kurash due to the fact that it only competes in a standing position, and there are few injuries through it. Today, on average, about 50 Kurash athletes train at the University. In addition, Kurash classes are held in 4 universities of Cameroon, such as the University of Douala, National Sport University and IUG.
In addition, our Federation has established its departments in 7 other regions besides the capital, and Kurash is actively developing in these regions as well.
More than 100 participants from at least 4 regions participate in each of our Kurash competitions.
Another thing is that there are many sports and federations that have been in the country for more than 20 years, but they have not covered all 5 regions of Cameroon.
This shows how the interest of Cameroonians in Kurash is increasing year by year.
Our goals are to ensure proper participation of Cameroonian athletes in International competitions and World Championships. We need high level medals. Only then Kurash will become one of the main sports in Cameroon.
In this regard, we are working on selecting talented Kurash athletes and training them at a strong level.
With the support of the President of the African Kurash Union, Mr. Thomas Dunker, we aim to have Cameroon host the African Championship in 2025.
I believe that this is also important in popularizing Kurash in the country.
