The first day of Kurash competition at the 20th Asian Games, currently being held in Aichi–Nagoya, Japan, has come to an end.
On the opening day, medals were contested in the women’s -57 kg and men’s +90 kg weight categories.
In the women’s -57 kg category, Uzbekistan’s Ibodatkhon Agojonova defeated all her opponents to claim the Asian Games gold medal. The silver medal went to Lee Wan-ting from Chinese Taipei, while the bronze medals were awarded to Kuroki Natsumi of Japan and Wang Pin-chun of Chinese Taipei.
In the men’s +90 kg category, the final became a particularly anticipated showdown. In the decisive bout, Uzbekistan’s Shokhrukhkhon Bakhtiyorov defeated Tajikistan’s Shakarmamad Mirmamadov to become the Asian Games champion.
Notably, the two athletes had also faced each other in the final of the Asian Kurash Championships held in Dushanbe three months ago. On that occasion, too, Uzbekistan’s Shokhrukhkhon Bakhtiyorov came out on top. The final in Aichi–Nagoya has now added another memorable chapter to their rivalry.
The bronze medals went to Uzbekistan’s Bekmurod Oltiboev and Thailand’s Kunathip Yea-on.
