Held every four years, Indonesia’s National Games Pekan Olahraga Nasional (PON) 2024 is recognized as the country’s Olympics.
More than 40 sports from the Olympic and Asian Games programs participate in it.
On September 9-20 of this year, these games are being organized for the 21st time in the cities of Aceh and North Sumatra.
If we look at the history of the Games, Indonesia was not able to participate in the 1948 Olympic Games. Because Indonesia’s independence was not recognized and Indonesia was not a member of the International Olympic Committee. An emergency conference was held in Solo, Indonesia on May 1, 1948, to discuss Indonesia’s inability to participate in the Olympics.
On September 8-12, 1948, the country decided to organize the first National Games.
During the first Pekan Olahraga Nasional event, many sports organizations tried the official uniform system across the country. This system has since been recognized as the most prestigious sports game in the country.
Significantly, Kurash was officially included in the National Games Program this year.
Indonesian Kurash Federation President General Hafil Fuddin said:
In 2020, “PON 2020”, held in Papua Province, featured Kurash as a demonstration sport. This year, at the initiative of the federation and the country’s government, Kurash officially participated in the “PON” competition held in Aceh and North Sumatra.
Before “PON 2024”, all sports must pass the qualification stage. Kurash held qualifying competitions in 18 out of 24 regions. 2 host regions have the right to participate directly.
On September 10-12, “PON 2024” Kurash competitions were held at the Jantho Hall sports complex.
A total of 10 weight categories and 2 team competitions were organized, 5 for women and 5 for men.
In total, more than 140 Kurash athletes competed for the title for 3 days.
The official participation of Kurash in the Indonesian National Games serves as a worthy step in the further popularization of Kurash in the country and the development of a unified program of sports in Indonesia.
