WADA’s banned list for 2024 has been announced. On January 1st, all of the listed drugs will be prohibited, including tramadol. The agency requests that serious changes to tramadol be reported by athletes, their entourage, and any other interested parties.

This list was approved by the WADA Executive Committee meeting held in Shanghai, China on September 22nd, 2023.
The list is one of the eight international standards that are binding on all countries that have signed the World Anti-Doping Code. It defines what substances and methods are prohibited both in competition and out of competition, and which substances are prohibited in particular sports.
Tramadol is in WADA’s Monitoring Program and data collected through this program has shown its significant use in sports. Tramadol use is a worldwide concern with the risk of physical dependence, opiate use disorder and overdose. In many countries, tramadol is regarded as a prohibited substance. A WADA-funded study also confirmed tramadol’s potential to enhance athletic performance.
