The African Kurash Union is one of the confederations that has been popularizing the sport of Kurash.
Under the leadership of Thomas Dunker, the sport of kurash was introduced in almost all regions of the African continent. The number of national federations is steadily increasing.
Ahead is the inclusion of Kurash as an official sport in the program of the 2023 All-Africa Games and Francophone Games to be held in Ghana and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
These issues were discussed in detail at the next Congress of the African Kurash Union in Gqeberha, Republic of South Africa.
Representatives of 16 member national federations of AKU participated in the congress.
Another point on the agenda was Mr. Yafali’s report on holding next year’s continental championship as part of the African Martial Arts Festival to be held in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on April 22-29, 2023.
According to Mr. Yafali, this festival is one of the most prestigious sports events on the African continent, and more than 10 Olympic and non-Olympic sports competitions are organized within the festival. In terms of popularity, 10,000 fans from about 20 countries are expected to participate.
Organizing the continental kurash championship within the festival will serve to further develop kurash on the African continent.
Also, AKU will host an IKA refereeing seminar and exam in the month of December 2022 and a National Grading will be held in Africa
The organizational points, which were on the agenda of the Congress, were also discussed. The current President of the African Kurash Union, Thomas Dunker, was unanimously re-elected as the President of the African Kurash Union.
Also, Martial Ngoka (Congo) General Secretary, Matthieu Kangang (Cameroon) Technical Director, Francis Yafali (Congo DR) Vice President, Willie Paulsen (Botswana), Willie Paulsen (BOT) & Boukari Moussa (BEN) Treasurers, Guy Ambeto (CGO) Referee Director, will lead African Kurash for 4 years.
